Sam Robert Heard

Sam decided to come a little early at 35 weeks and 2 days gestation. He was born at 10:57 pm on June 15. He weighed 5 lbs 13 oz and measured 19 1/2 inches long. I was so relieved once he arrived and I could see that he was doing well. As a NICU nurse I was very concerned when my water broke.
So, here is the story of Sam's arrival.
Richard and I had been trying to get a few things in their place Saturday morning. (Getting the room straightened, washing the car seat cover, etc.) Then right after lunch Richard headed 2 hours away to go fishing with a friend. I put Kirksey down for her nap and started watching MSU baseball in their first game of the College World Series. Once Richard got to Greenwood he realized that he didn't have phone service so his friend, Ricky, text me his number just in case I need to get in touch with Richard. About 10 min later (around 2:55 pm) I got up to go to the restroom and a huge "gush" occurred. I'll admit that I was a little in denial that my water had just broken. In hindsight, it was very obvious. (I did not know what it was like with Kirksey since they did that after I got my epidural with her). Immediately I called Richard to tell him about it, and he got back in his car to drive here. I then called my OB who told me to head into the hospital. So, I woke Kirksey up from her nap and drove us to the hospital. It was not a fun drive. Poor Richard was on speaker with me for most of the drive making sure that I got us there alright, while I was both crying and trying to keep it together. After checking into the hospital, it was confirmed that my water had broken and I would be having a baby soon. I was doing so well progressing on my own that I was never given any medicine to speed labor up. Finally close to 10:30 I was ready to push. They got everything ready, called NICU to attend the delivery, and before they could arrive Sam was here crying robustly. I only had to push one time!
I could not be more thankful for how well things had gone, especially after being a high risk pregnancy and early labor. He is just as perfect as could be!
